8 Clever Uses for Charcoal
- A Natural Dehumidifier - If you've got a damp basement, fill a large coffee can or large yogurt tub with charcoal and punch some holes in the lid. The charcoals will absorb the humidity in the air.
- Air Freshener - Out of Arm & Hammer? Believe it or not, try a chunk of charcoal instead! It absorbs and eliminate odors.
- Keep Plants Fresh - Drop a chunk in a vase or with plants you are trying to root. Charcoal acts as a water purifier and keeps it clear and clean.
- Mulch for Your Garden - Try charcoal instead of wood chips or mulch. The charcoal will serve two purposes: (1) it will keep moisture in your soil and (2) like newspaper (Use Newspaper to Control Weeds), it will help keep the weeds away.
- Keep Books from Smelling Musty - Libraries have been using this trick for ages. Simply tuck a chunk of charcoal on your bookshelf to absorb odors. This trick works best in glass cases.
- Keep Your Tools Rust Free - As we noted in the first tip in this list, charcoal helps to remove moisture from the air. So just toss a chunk in your tool box and it will help keep your tools from rusting.
- Store with Rock Salt and/or Sand - You may be picking up a theme here...Since charcoal is a great absorbent, consider throwing a few chunks in with rock salt and/or sand you use to spread on the ground to keep ice and snow off of sidewalks and driveways in the winter. The charcoal will keep the rock salt and sand from clumping and freezing together (which happens when moisture gets in).
- Composting - A little charcoal in your compost will keep carbon levels up and keep your compost healthy.
- Be careful with some charcoal, especially in your garden as many have additives to help them burn in them.
- Works great inside a closed up boat to absorb dampness in summer and winter time.
DIY Swiffer Mops
- Buy small wash cloths. They are usually on sale at Target (15pack) for $3. The are in the bath section.
- Use the wash cloth on the swiffer mop instead of buying a box of swiffer mop cloths that get thrown away. You can use the wash cloth over and over, just wash it and reuse.
- Use used dryer sheets for the swifter. It works great at getting dog hair off floors
- Don't buy the refills for the mop solution. Use a spray bottle with a small amount of Murphy's Oil Soap and water, spray the floor and then mop over it (for hardwood floors).
- Old cotton socks make a great swiffer cloth. Cut off the top, then cut the foot part down the middle lengthwise. tuck into the holes and "voila".
- When you re-wash whatever cloths you use on your Swiffer, make sure NOT to use fabric softener. It needs the static electricity to pick up the dirt!
Trick to Extend the Life of Your Razor
- Take a small glass jar, fill it with a half-inch of mineral oil (available at your local pharmacy), and keep your razor in it when not in use. The end!
- The reason it works so well is because razor wear is caused by corrosion, NOT USE.
- A note on use: for sanitary purposes, change the oil once in a while. Also, when done shaving, blow as much water droplets from your razor as possible because they will cling to the razor even in the oil, thus negating the benefits. And before shaving, give the razor a good rinse to remove as much mineral oil as possible. When there is still a lot of mineral oil on the blade it can give you kind of a weird, "un-close" shave because of the lubricating properties of oil.
- And if you don't like the look of a sauce jar on your shelf, just find a suitable vase.
- If you have a baby and have baby oil hanging around, you can use this as the main ingredient is mineral oil. Or you can use olive oil, and not have to keep it in a glass.
